Step 7: Make the Final Go/No-Go Decision

Decision already made? Committed to move? Picked a date? No qualms or doubts? Then go do it! If not, list the pros and cons of changing. It’s important to be honest with yourself here! Here's a Worksheet to use. Some refer to it as a "force field" since it display forces in favor or doing it and forces opposed.

Are the pros really strong? If the decision still is not clear, what can you do to make the pros stronger? For example, if you plan to work, consider finding a really interesting job before you move. Or, if you want to be near a river or lake, see if there is a way to live on the waterfront.

Are the cons realistic, not exaggerated? What can you do to make the cons weaker or less important to you? For example, if you are concerned about whether newcomers are welcome, visit your church to make friends before you move or try to locate a club that specializes in a hobby you have.

Still hesitating?

Are you possibly hesitating because you are uncomfortable with all the difficulties of making the change? If so, remember that most of these problems will be gone after the move is over. This is quite different from being concerned about whether the new location is going to meet your needs. If it doesn’t, you may feel worse after the move is over.

Ask yourself how tough it would be to undo the change and move back. It may be embarrassing, but sometimes it is better to own up to a mistake and correct it, if you can.

Reconsider whether you may need to spend more time visiting or trying out the new location.

Finally, if you are still having trouble deciding whether you really want to make the change, here’s a technique that is designed to help you find out what you feel deep down inside.

Find a coin . . . a special coin if you have one. Decide whether heads or tails means you will move. After all, if you haven’t been able to reach a conclusion then chance is a pretty good way to go, right? Or, you may feel that a greater power will influence how the coin falls.

Flip the coin and see whether it's heads or tails. Does this mean go or stay? What was your immediate response.. pleased? disappointed? puzzled?

Your reaction is the key. Click here for an explanation.
